HR Mentoring
What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a relationship whereby the mentor, who is experienced in their field, supports the mentee in their learning and experimentation and helps them develop their potential. The mentor guides, influences and shares their knowledge and experiences with the mentee so that the mentee learns from their mentor.
A mentoring relationship is one where both mentor and mentee recognise the need for personal development. Successful mentoring is based upon trust and confidentiality.
Usually, the mentoring relationship is a long term one – most commonly between an individual and their manager. However, not all managers have the same area of expertise as the individual and this is where an external mentor comes in. With almost twenty years’ experience in the field of Human Resources, Carys offers a mentorship for individuals working within the field of HR at any level.
Who is mentoring for?
People managers and anybody working in a HR role at any level may feel that they could use the support of a mentor. HR roles can often be lonely, particularly for standalone HR professionals or people managers within organisations that don’t have a HR team to turn to. Having a mentor they can check in with and use as a sounding board can be an invaluable support for anybody.

What To expect from a mentoring session.
Before the first session
The first step is to have a short ‘getting to know you’ session with the client. This is to learn a about the client, their work and what outcomes they’d like to achieve. During this initial session the mentor will ascertain whether they’re the right person to mentor the client or whether they think the client would be better served by another mentor.
Online sessions
The client and mentor will discuss how matters have progressed since the previous session and will address any other work-related matters the client wishes to discuss. Each session is an opportunity for the client to ask questions and get advice and guidance from the mentor and to share ideas. The client can expect to do a lot of talking, listening and thinking during each session.
To get the best out of each session the client will need to be fully present with emails and phones switched off so as to reduce potential distractions as far as possible.

Research shows that being outside can balance our cognitive mindset, change the way we think, enhance our wellbeing by lowering anxiety, stress and depression and can regulate emotion. So if the client agrees (and the weather is favourable!) the mentor may suggest a ‘walk and talk’ session.*
To get the best out of each session the client will need to be fully present with emails and phones switched off so as to reduce potential distractions as far as possible.
* The mentor is not liable for any accidents or injuries that take place during walk and talk sessions.
